Office 365 with Office 2010 Desktop Suite - "Edit in Word/Excel" option doesnt work consistently

Hi there,

Our environment consists of the below:

Windows 7 SP1 with x86 and x64 machines
Internet Explorer 9
Office 2010 Professional SP2
Lync 2013 SP1
OneDrive for Business
Sharepoint Online / Office 365

We have an issue for some users where they are unable to edit documents in Office 2010 when they click the "Edit in Excel/Word" button on Office 365.  There is no error, just the application never loads.  We are trying to establish a pattern for this but can anyone shed any light on what is required?  The info from Microsoft which I have found does not seem to say conclusively that you need X, Y, Z.  Just that it works "best" with IE11, Office 2013 etc...
